Safe Space
In a collegiate setting, “safe space” can refer to two concepts. Academic safe spaces are classrooms where students can explore challenging topics and engage in civil discourse to foster free speech.
Additionally, some student organizations may create safe spaces to provide support and a sense of security for members from underrepresented backgrounds. The goal of these safe spaces is to provide individuals or groups with an environment free of any forms of prejudice, discrimination, criticism, or physical and emotional harm. This allows individuals to express themselves without fear of judgment or harm.
As college campuses in the U.S. deal with the growing mental health crisis, safe spaces can be an essential part of everyone’s life, particularly in providing a secure atmosphere where meaningful discussions can take place without fear of judgment.
